Trade In A Tea Cup

I like this editorial illustration from the New York Times op-ed, “Throwing Free Trade Overboard.”

This teacup is a visual metaphor for the Tea Party. Within its circular border is a container ship, carrying goods for international trade. It’d like to set out to the high seas, but it can’t.

Its passage is being blocked by the cup’s rim, which is a representation for protectionism, a backward-looking economic policy the Tea Party-ers are clamoring for.
