Sock Puppet Spies

The U.S. military is developing software that will allow it to covertly snoop on social media conversations and participate in them with the aim of spreading pro-American propaganda.

These so-called spies, known as “sock puppets,” are fake online personalities that would allow one U.S. military personnel to control up to 10 separate identities based all over the world.

A California-based corporation has been awarded a contract with United States Central Command, which oversees U.S. armed operations in the Middle East and Central Asia, to develop what is described as an “online persona management service.”
