Heating Up Mars

Chris McKay, a Mars expert at the NASA Ames Research Center, theorizes that, to make the Red Planet habitable for humans, engineers would have to create on Mars, the every process they’re trying to curb on Earth—global warming.

The goal would be to raise the surface temperature of the planet by a total of about 7.2 degrees Fahrenheit. This would cause the “heat-trapping carbon dioxide to be released from the planet’s south polar ice cap, producing a further average temperature rise of even greater magnitude, perhaps as much as 70 degrees Celsius or 126 degrees Fahrenheit.”

That would melt the ice, which in turn, would melt into water, creating the basic condition to support life.
