Flying Straight Up

In keeping with NASA’s “goal of extending human presence across the solar system,” the space agency is testing a new kind of vehicle for exploring small worlds, such as moons and asteroids.

Morpheus is a lander, capable of vertical takeoff and landing, which can navigate autonomously. That aside, it’s also propelled by an attractive technology: a mix of liquid oxygen and methane, both of which burn cleanly, and are easy to both manufacture and store in space.
