The Walkman was the iPod of its day. It was the cool gadget every cool kid had to have.

When the first Sony Walkman, TPS-L2, arrived on July 1, 1979, it wasn’t the world’s first portable audio device. (That honor belongs to the Regency TR-1, the first portable transistor radio, which made its debut in 1954.)

But it was the world’s first portable, low-cost, audio player that fit in your pocket. And it was my first portable music player. Sony stopped making the Walkman in 2010.
