In The Care Of Robots

PARO is a robot-caregiver that responds to humans as if it’s alive.

In the New York Times op-ed, “The Future of Robot-Caregivers,” Louise Aronson writes that in an ideal world, a robot-caregiver would “sound like an oxymoron” because “each of us would have, at least, one kind and fully capable human caregiver to meet our physical and emotional needs as we age.” But most of us don’t live in such a world.

Therefore, it’s better to have a reliable robot for a companion than to have an unreliable or an abusive person or no one at all. PARO, a robot-caregiver with the look and voice of a baby seal, was developed in Japan to meet an acute need in elderly care.
