Our Nutty Galaxy

The “peanut” at the core of the Milky Way.

A 3D map of the Milky Way has revealed that the nucleus of our home galaxy has a bulge, which, when seen edgewise,  looks like a peanut in its shell, and an elongated bar, from above.

The discovery was made by two groups of astronomers, from Germany and Chile, with the aid of data from the European Southern Observatory’s powerful ground telescopes, based in Chile.
