Squirrels Are Good Cooks

The timid European ground squirrel, stopping to smell the daisies, photographed in Vienna, by Julian Rad.

Richard Thorington, an expert on squirrels, has observed a curious habit in these skittish creatures.

Red squirrels make mushroom jerky, by hanging the fungi out to dry between tree branches, so that they keep better over the winter.

The Smithsonian Museum of Natural History is home to more than 30,000 kinds of squirrels.
