Sending “Sandcrawlers” To Mars

Mobile, smoke-emitting skyscrapers on Mars.

The race to send humans to Mars has already begun, with new players joining the fray every day. But a team of designers from Spain has a still loftier ambition: to terraform it.

They propose to build mobile skyscrapers on the Red Planet, which will lumber across its surface, spewing greenhouse gases into its cold, thin atmosphere, in the processing, warming it up for human habitation.

These structures call to mind the “sandcrawlers” from “Star Wars”—those fortress-like transports that the Jawas move around in on the sandy deserts of Tatooine, scavenging technology for sale or to trade.

The “Star Wars” sandcrawler.
