Fairy circles—those strange, barren, circular patches of land that arrange themselves in a honeycomb-like pattern—had been documented only in southwestern Africa up until now. But recently, they were also discovered in Australia.

Researchers have been puzzling over them since the Seventies, but haven’t been able to agree on what causes these rings to form.
