Your Very Own Sky Car

The Jetsons’ “capsule car.”

People have dreamed of flying to work in their very own sky cars for a long time. In the 1950s, that technology seemed to be well within grasp.

A magazine advertisement in 1958, paid for by America’s Independent Electric Light and Power Companies, which trumpeted the role of electricity in powering the technology of the future and in turn, elevating the standard of living, depicted a flying saucer-shaped “hovercar,” taking off from a suburban home.

It said:

YOUR PERSONAL “FLYING CARPET.” Step into it. Press a button and off you go to market; to your friend’s home; or to your job. Take off and land anywhere; no parking problem. Plug into any electric outlet for recharging. They’re working on it!
