The Round Elephant

“Celebes,” by Max Ernst.

In “Celebes” (1921), the German Dadaist Max Ernst depicts his vision of an elephant as a big cauldron with legs. A headless, nude woman stands in front of it. Up in the clouds, there’s a school of fish.

This mechanical creature derives from a photograph of a Sudanese corn bin.
